Homemade Korean Bibimbap Recipe

When we were in Baguio, we had this wonderful dinner almost everyday. Mom discovered a Korean stall inside SM Baguio and that really caught our attention. Foods are affordable compared to other Korean Restaurants in Baguio and Batangas. A plate of Korean Bibimbap costs Php99. That's so cheap. Here, it's like 250 per hot plate including side dishes.

By the way, Bibimbap, a signatured korean dish and is listed at number 40 on World's 50 most delicious foods readers' poll compiled by CNN Go in 2011, according to Mr. Wiki. Bibim (mixing) + bap/bop (rice), so it is a mixed rice. It is composed of steamed rice, seasoned vegetables, meat (beef [original], chicken, pork) and kimchi.

Because of our love for this dish, I tried to make it at home. It isn't as difficult as I thought.

Just prepare the following:

1 cup Chinese cabbage
1 cup swamp cabbage
1 cup carrots
1 cup chayote (chopped)
1 cup sprout
(first three veggies are julliened)
kimchi (available in any grocery stores)
1 egg
1 cup ground beef
Bulgogi sauce
Sesame oil
Sesame seed
Cooked rice

Place all the veggies in a steam casserole. We steamed all the vegetables and poured 3 tablespoons of sesame oil. Actually, you can stir fry the veggies or just steam it like we did. Portion them like the photo below. Steam for about 10 minutes or until the vegetables are done.

If you don't have Bulgogi sauce for the ground beef, you can make beefsteak as a substitute.

Boil the meat in Bulgogi sauce.

Make sunny side up egg for the topping.

The photo below shows the finished product. Sprinkle sesame seeds if you like. Don't forget the cooked rice in the middle first before the veggies.

And yes, that's it. You already have Korea's signature dish, Bibimbap.

Yield: 1-2 servings.
